Perfect and just in time for Spring! This set of three petal bowls by Orrefors are titled Mayflower. There is one icy blue one, one buttercup yellow, and one minty green. Smaller at 5 1/8 inches in diameter and 3 ¾ inches tall but so beautifully designed by Jan Johansson long time designer for Orrefors. They were first created in 1994 and discontinued in 2010. These happen to still be in their original boxes. Each is signed on the bottom and retains their Orrefors Sweden shield sticker.
Jan Johansson was born in 1942. He trained as a silversmith in Stockholm at the College of Arts, Crafts and Design. He began his career at Orrefors in 1969. His goal as an artist was in refining the optical effect of pure sculptural crystal. He is quoted as saying “I want to shape the crystal by controlling the light. If the light dies, so does the glass.” In my humble opinion he has done so with many of his designs.
Orrefors glassworks was founded in 1898 in Småland, Sweden on the previous site of an older iron works. Until 1913 they made primarily technical, medical and household glass. In 1914 under new ownership and management they began making crystal products including cut crystal and etched art glass. From that time forward Orrefors has excelled in all types of creative glass manufacture employing renowned artists and winning multiple awards. They continue production today primarily at their glassworks in Kosta using techniques developed in Småland. According to Orrefors official site no fewer than 15 people contribute to the production of a single piece of glass. It is no wonder Orrefors is a revered name among glass collectors worldwide.
These bowls will be gorgeous on your springtime table or shelf. It looks like they may have been purchased but never used. Such a shame. You need to make them yours and show them off!
