Ralph Lauren began his career with the simple goal of creating clothes that he wanted to wear. He was unhappy with the style of men’s clothing at the time and decided to design clothes for himself. It all started with a neckwear line which he launched under the name Polo in 1967. Each was handmade from the highest quality fabrics. He officially turned his passion for fashion into a career with a sales job at the Brooks Brother in New York at the age of 24. In 1970, the Polo by Ralph Lauren shop opened in Bloomingdale’s and Ralph oversees every detail, down to the wood paneling and by the end of the decade Polo by Ralph Lauren stores were on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and outposts in Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Palm Beach, Chicago, and Fort Lauderdale. In 1976 Ralph Lauren won the Coty Award for women’s wear and the Coty Hall of Fame Award for menswear. The signature green bottle Polo fragrance was introduced in 1978. In 1983 Ralph Lauren Home made its debut. This was a first for a clothing designer. The 4 signature motifs were Thoroughbred, New England, Jamaica, and Log Cabin until 1984 when he presented the Safari collection for the film Out of Africa. In 1991 he received the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. He has an incredible timeline of achievements. Ralph Lauren Home Furniture Collections can still be purchased to the trade and through their website.
Henredon was founded in 1945 by four Drexel Heritage executives; T. Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards, Donnell VanOppen, and Sterling Collet. The name Henredon is a combination of their names. These four men were determined to build furniture of custom quality and their original offering was only three chests. It has since blossomed into hundreds of designs still in keeping with their goal. Through the years they have engaged well-known designers to create their unique and fine furniture. They currently are part of the company Furniture Brands, Inc. but still embracing their long-standing tradition of fine furniture craftsmanship and reputation for timeless elegance.
