This is an absolutely marvelous vintage cockfighting, betting, or sporting chair comprised of a solid maple frame with a saddle seat, elevated tray or armrest, and a tri-leg base with stretchers wrapped with twisted rope details! It has a naturally distressed finish that can only be accrued over years of use and the hands of time! It has a few “perfectly imperfect” scrapes, chips, and even a couple of rings where it assisted in beverage holding for its player!! Boy, do we wish it could talk and tell us some of the incredible stories it must have experienced throughout its life! It is SO AWESOME!!! These chairs date back to the 18th & 19th Century when cockfighting was a legal sport. This past time ranged across all social classes, ALL over the world, and were held in cockpits in a massive range of areas from dark and savage back alleys to the lavish drawing rooms of elite & wealthy gentlemen. The sitter/better would straddle the seat and use the tray to hold their beverage while they participated. Fortunately, those fights are of a bygone era as they were banned in 1835, but the history of the chair is still pretty cool as its popularity remained clear up to Victorian times. We would like to think of it more as an incredible piece of history, leaving the past… in the past!!! HA! Here’s to New Beginnings!!! This chair would be so fun to have in a game room, in a library as a reading chair, in a dressing area as a spot to remove your shoes, or among other Rustic pieces in the family room.
