This Lane cedar chest is a real SWEETHEART!!!! And that’s not just our opinion… It’s what the original paperwork says!! This is an absolutely GORGEOUS Lane Sweetheart cedar chest including the original hang tags and brochure paperwork dating its creation on exactly May 15th, 1972. It is comprised of a SOLID (and quite heavy,) cabinet wood frame with a rich dark brown exterior finish bearing beautiful barley twist trim detail surrounding the front of the chest, an aroma-tite cedar inner open storage, a newly upholstered sultry black faux leather top with button detail, lovely twisted cast brass handles, and the chest is held on antiqued brass toned ball casters… AND it locks!!!! We had a new key made for the locking mechanism and the amount of storage space it has is RIDICULOUS!! Back when I graduated (yes… WAY back when…,) my parents gave me a similar Lane cedar chest as a graduation gift and I’m here to tell you, that thing STILL has the cedar smell when you lift the top and has kept my memorabilia intact without flaw!! No moldy smells, no bugs, and no moisture!!!! It is sure to keep your linens, blankets, sweaters, lingerie, treasures, and your “WHOLE TROUSSEAU,” (as the brochure states!) safe and secure in spectacular Lane style!!! It is Spanish Revival in style with a Mediterranean and Jacobean flair and it is sure to “sweeten” your home with its timeless presence! It would be beautiful in absolutely ANY room of your home and if you decide to move it, conveniently ROLL it wherever you choose. Mine used to serve as a bench at the foot of my bed and it went from then collecting items for a future hopeful home to now holding beloved & irreplaceable memories including photos, hand-me-downs, and nostalgic notes and gifts from my “now adult” babies! This is a true time capsule for any and all of your treasures!!!!! Don’t let it go!!
Lane was founded in 1912 by Edward Hudson Lane at the age of 21, upon his father’s suggestion after he, John Edward Lane, bought a small packing-box plant in Altavista, Virginia. Edward procured a loan and converted the factory to make cedar chests and named it The Standard Red Cedar Chest Co. Sales were good and the company expanded. But during WWI, with the banning of rail freight deemed non-essential, they began making pine ammunition boxes. This is notable as it led to an assembly line which was revolutionary and became the first moving conveyor assembly system in the furniture industry. After the war, with sales still increasing Ed Lane decided he could risk giving the company his name and changed it to The Lane Co. in 1922. They began advertising and an ambitious program of research and development leading to hiring their first staff designer and sales force. They made it through the depression with a lot of hard work and again during WWII converted to providing items needed for wartime. After WWII a complete design department was added. They were innovative creating new materials. One called Lanewood which was produced from waste wood. 1951 brought the making of occasional tables. Then in 1956 the acquisitions began of other companies to add case goods and upholstered furnishings. With production of their mid-century-modern furnishings, the company continued to grow and expand until in 1987 it was acquired by Interco, Inc. But, for 75 years the Lane family of Altavista, Virginia ran the business with Edwards son, Bernard Bell (B.B.) Lane, being at the helm at the end. Lane is still to this day a leading U. S. furniture manufacturer.
