The first one opened in Chicago and through the 1980’s Sears became the largest retailer in the U.S. In 2005, Sears was bought by management of the big box chain K-mart but after several years of declining sales, the company filed for bankruptcy. As of April 2024, there are 11 Sears stores remaining 10 of which are in the United States and one in Puerto Rico.
