The original Montgomery Ward began in 1872 as a worldwide mail order business and later developed into a department store chain that operated until 2001. Aaron Montgomery Ward started his business in Chicago and ran into his first competition in the mail order business when Richard Warren Sears introduced their first catalog. Both fought for dominance in the marketplace for much of the 20th Century. They also built a huge distribution center across the country and finally broke the mail order only business when it opened its first brick and mortar retail outlet store in 1926. By the end of the 1930s, Montgomery Ward had become the country’s largest retailer. In 1944 the company’s CEO Avery Sewell refused to settle a nationwide strike requested by the Roosevelt administration and President Roosevelt issued an order to seize all Montgomery Ward properties and after World War II and the Depression, Sewell decided not to open any new stores and they soon became the nation’s third-largest department store chain. During the 1970s, the company continued to struggle. By 1985, the company closed its catalog business after 113 years and began an aggressive policy of renovating its remaining stores. The current Montgomery Ward Inc. is a national online shopping and mail-order catalog retailer.
