Norwalk Furniture Company manufactures custom, high-quality upholstery in Norwalk, Ohio. They have a long four-generation family history dating back to 1902 when the founders, the Gerken family arrived from Germany and began business upholstering buggy seats for carriages! In 1919 Edward Gerken incorporated the company and named it Norwalk Upholstering Company. His son Ray Gerken, who was a furniture salesman assumed leadership after his father’s death in 1934. Norwalk contributed to the WW2 effort by converting to produce war materials but would go back to upholstery after the war. In 1965 Norwalk Upholstering Company became Norwalk Furniture Corporation and Ray stepped aside and his sons Jack & Ned became president & vice president. In 2002 they celebrated a century of accomplishments in fine furniture but in 2008 they came upon an economic struggle and suffered a temporary shutdown; however, 12 local families banded together to help and refused to let the company fail. Those families formed an ESOP and are present owners of the company today. They have been renamed Norwalk Custom Order Furniture, dba Norwalk Furniture.
