Arne Hovmand-Olsen

Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919-1989) was born in the middle of Denmark, precisely in Kirkeby Sogn, to a farming family and the oldest of five. However, the farming life was not for Arne. Showing his artistic side early, in 1938 he was apprenticed to cabinetmaker, P. Olsen Sibast at his furniture factory on Denmark’s island of Funen. In 1941 after finishing his apprenticeship, and knowing he wanted to produce his own designs, he enrolled in Århus technical school specializing in furniture design. 1944 saw him opening his own studio, Design Arne Hovmand-Olsen, where he immediately began creating his own designs to great success. Not only selling in Denmark but also the United States, becoming a pioneer in the export of designer furniture to a larger audience. During his career, in addition to designing and making pieces in his own studio, he also designed his clean-lined, simple, and organic furniture for many Scandinavian greats, such as J. L. Moller and Mogens Kold Mobelfabrik to name just two. Due to ill health he was forced to close his studio in the 1970s and passed in 1989.
