Folke Ohlsson

Folke Ohlsson is a Scandinavian modern Swedish furniture designer who was born in 1919, raised, and educated in Sweden. But in 1953 Ohlsson moved to the United States and established Dux, Inc. an American iteration or namesake of the Scandinavian furniture industry’s largest manufacturer of upholstered furniture. This creation of an American company producing Scandinavian furniture may be for what Folke Ohlsson is best remembered. Well that and the invention/introduction of knock-down furniture which is still used today by the likes of Ikea! Ohlsson headquarter the company in San Francisco for three years before moving it to Burlingame, California in 1956. Over the years other great designers i.e. Bruno Mathsson and Edward J Wormley did designs for the company but it was the designs of Folke Ohlsson’s armchair and sofas that were prized for their traditional details and modernist simplicity not to mention formal recognition and awards. Folke Ohlsson passed on October 23, 2002.
