Hans Wegner
Wegner,1914-2007, was born in Tonder, Denmark. He apprenticed with a master cabinetmaker and when he was 15 designed and made his first chair. Studying at The Danish School of Arts and Crafts he eventually, after working in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller’s architectural office, found his way to Johannes Hansen and Michael Laursen. In 1940 making his first mass produced chair, a rocking chair. for Laursen. 1943 found him opening his own studio and in 1949 he began his partnership with Carl Hansen and Son. He championed modernism, craftsmanship and Nordic functionality and drew on the Chinese furniture designs for inspiration becoming a multi-award-winning designer with pieces in many museum’s collections worldwide. And, although best known for his chairs, did create incredible cabinetry, desks, tables, beds, and lighting.
