Hans Wegner changed the way the world looked at furniture. And this CH 35 chair is just one of the reasons why. Its sculptural silhouette combined with its rich material selection make it a feast for the eye. Not to mention its comfort albeit minimal look. The CH 35 chair is but one in the series of chairs designed by Wegner in the pursuit of the perfect chair. To my mind he could have stopped after this one! Comprised of warm luxurious teak for the frame and rich black leather for the seat. Following Wegner’s design ethic “there is nothing superfluous about it, no unnecessary details”….it draws on the joinery and materials for its beauty.
Wegner,1914-2007, was born in Tonder, Denmark. He apprenticed with a master cabinetmaker and when he was 15 designed and made his first chair. Studying at The Danish School of Arts and Crafts he eventually, after working in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller’s architectural office, found his way to Johannes Hansen and Michael Laursen. In 1940 making his first mass produced chair, a rocking chair. for Laursen. 1943 found him opening his own studio and in 1949 he began his partnership with Carl Hansen and Son. He championed modernism, craftsmanship and Nordic functionality and drew on the Chinese furniture designs for inspiration becoming a multi-award-winning designer with pieces in many museum’s collections worldwide. And, although best known for his chairs, did create incredible cabinetry, desks, tables, beds, and lighting.
Carl Hansen started his business, Carl Hansen and Son, in the early 1900s. His son, Holger, of the “son” in the name began running the business in 1949. At that time, he began a collaboration with yet unknown designer, Hans Wegner, that would last a lifetime producing most of Wegner’s award-winning designs. Carl Hansen’s grandson, Knud Erik Hansen, now heads the company which continues to produce some of Wegner’s pieces along with many other well-known furniture designers.
This gorgeous iconic CH 35 Chair by Wegner is no longer in production, so don’t hesitate. Make it yours.
