This is an incredible Art Nouveau gilt bronze chryselephantine sculpture titled Parasol by artist René-Paul Marquet (French, 1875-1939). The bronze skirt is signed R. Marquet and she stands on a cream and rose painter’s pallet shaped marble base. The marble base is damaged – please see photo – but the elegant lady with Parasol is excellent. The contrast of her ivory – colored face and hands to the gilt bronze is so beautiful and indicative of sculpture of this time. This lovely piece came from an estate where the grandfather was the Chief Medical Officer of the Panama Canal during the first half of the 20th Century and that is where this piece was purchased.
René-Paul Marquet was born in Port Louis and then studied sculpture and painting under Jean Falguiere and Emmanuel Fontaine. He won an honorable mention for his exhibited figures at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1909.
