Handsome extra-long and low mid-century modern coffee table or stretcher bench designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. It is in wonderful restored condition. That does not mean it looks brand new. It retains a beautiful age patina that may include small nicks and scratches and you may still be able to see a difference in color of the top where a cushion was placed for years. Please see photos. Incredible! This is one of the most amazing mid-century modern pieces I have ever seen, and it is another of the awesome pieces out of my personal stash. It does retain its original tag denoting designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. It is comprised of a simple rectangular walnut veneer top held up by three sets of solid walnut square legs joined lengthwise by round rod stretchers. Simply stunning!! Milo was fond of this dual duty type of piece that could be used as a nice low table and with the addition of cushions become extra seating. Use this fabulous piece with a wonderful long mid-century modern sofa (hint we just happen to have one listed it look marvelous paired with) or make it a bench in a wide hallway, in front of a fireplace, or along a wall in the living room or family room.

One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs.
