There’s a soft breeze blowing through the trees tickling your face and causing the leaves to dance and sway as you peacefully float in your canoe…the gentle waves of the stream softly rock your boat and you wait patiently, anticipating the gentle nibble of a fish on the end of your line….at least, that’s what I see when I gaze upon this magnificent impasto oil painting by Van Hoople. It is labeled “Waterscape” a Hillside Original which is indicative of time since Hillside Galleries is where he began working under his exclusive contract in 1957. This oil painting is beautifully crafted on hardboard with color blends of blue, green, yellow, and brown. It is highly textured a.k.a. “impasto,” and set-in a vintage walnut frame. This mid-century modern painting is composed of stunning detail and warm, beautiful color blends and will look wonderful in any room of your home.
Van Hoople was born in Chicago, IL but was referred to as a California artist. He attended the University of Texas and worked for Paramount Studios in Hollywood and apprenticed for Cecil B Demilles and scene director P.T. Blackburn. He was under exclusive contract to Hillside Galleries starting in 1957. His works have received notable recognition throughout the U.S., and he is becoming more recognizable throughout the world. His paintings are characterized by a deep, almost high relief, impasto, as if the paint were cut with a gouge. They are classic Mid Century, blending well with interiors decorated with furnishings and fixtures of the time.
