The Metropolitan Furniture Co. was founded by Louis Abrams in 1905. In 1987, the company was purchased by Steelcase Inc., a major international furniture manufacturing company that also places a heavy emphasis on environmental concerns. The company, never formally shed the name, though its ads and business cards now use “Metro.” Metro, which started in San Francisco in 1905 and settled in Oakland four years ago after a stint in South San Francisco, both designs and builds furniture. In the early 1960s, when most furniture companies were selling traditional home furnishings, Metro promoted “modern design with sleek, clean lines,” according to Dan Chong, the company’s chief executive.
Jules “J” Heumann was an American artist who was born into the manufacturing company in1924. Jules studied architecture at the University of California, graduating in 1944, when he joined the United States Navy as an officer and served in the Pacific theater until the end of the war. Returning to California, he then joined his father in the family business. His father passed in 1949 and he and his brother took over ownership. With his architectural background training and keen interest and knowledge of the intricacies of manufacturing, Jules brought to his furniture designs a sense of scale and proportion which results in beauty and comfort. Jules passed away on December 16, 2017, and according to his biography, he enjoyed collector car tours, good food, and fine wine, along with his lifelong interest in design, architecture, and engineering.
