Can we have a little privacy please?? Actually, privacy with quintessential chinoiserie magnificence?? Yes…. Yes, we can!!! This is a phenomenal vintage chinoiserie 4 panel Coromandel folding screen intricately hand carved and painted, lacquered, and embellished with textured & raised Chinese Export pattern designs. Each folding panel is held together with brass hinges, and it stands upon unique eye-catching brass foot caps at the base of each panel. It is absolutely STUNNING! The front features a serene scene of a Chinese village with lovely Geisha ladies wearing beautiful kimonos carrying flowers and facial fans. The water is softly trickling beneath their delicate feet and the breeze is gently blowing through the leaves of the trees that surround the river, bridge, and bungalows while a delightful scent of fresh plum blossoms tickles their petite noses. The peaceful village scenery is bordered with a hand carved and gilded gold line with meander-like details in each corner of the end panels. The back of the screen is adorned with striking hand carved, painted, and lacquered green bamboo trees, bordered with red hand painted carved double lines, Chinese lettering in the top left corner of the panel, and a “Lacquer Furniture Shanghai China” label on the right lower panel. It is fascinating!! Bamboo represents patience, faith, perseverance, growth & development, and most of all… human potential! Fun fact: the lacquer techniques for the Coromandel screens which is known as kuancai, meaning “incised colors” emerged during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was applied to screens to create dark screens incised, painted, and inlaid with art of mother-of-pearl, ivory, and other materials. Folding screens, also known as pingfeng, meaning: (ping-screen; blocking) (feng-breeze; wind) originated from ancient China, eventually spreading to the rest of East Asia. They were originally used to help hold back drafts in the home or they were placed in rooms to be used as a dressing screen for ladies. This incredible 4 panel folding screen would make a beautiful room divider, a wonderful shield for a dressing area, or fabulous chinoiserie décor against a wall or floating in any room you choose. Need a little Zen in your life? You just found it! You only need to make it YOURS!!!
