These beautiful Qing Dynasty antique Chinese hand painted porcelain Rose Medallion 8.5-inch plates depict traditional alternating panels of floral with birds and village scenes and a floral central medallion. Each plate’s design varies slightly from the other. One has an unmarked bottom which dates its origin to prior to 1890 and after approximately 1850, since this style of Chinese porcelain was first made in the mid-1800s to satisfy the export demand from Europe and later the United States. The second plate is marked CHINA on the bottom which dates it to circa 1890 to 1920. This pair of plates have an interesting provenance. They were once owned by the man who was the Chief Medical Officer at the Panama Canal during the first half of the 20th century where and when these were obtained. I’m told they were friends with and entertained young Ike and Mamie Eisenhower. So, possibly Ike was served from one of these plates! Whether actual or not, they are wonderfully beautiful and fine; and, it’s a delightful story! I know you want this awesome pair. And possibly you want more of differing sizes? It just so happens we have other plates listed in assorted designs and states of condition, along with other Chinese porcelain. Just go to our storefront to see all our listings.
