I think there’s something FISHY going on here at the shop!! And by Fishy I mean… a Fantastic Fishy Fantasy Figural Fabulous… Sculpture. HA… Say THAT 3 times fast! All tongue twisting and jokes aside, we got this guy JUST in time! Poor guy had been in an unfortunate accident and was in need of some serious attention. He suffered a few broken ligaments and was in desperate turmoil. Thank GOODNESS for our incredibly talented, caring staff!! Not only did he get the FINEST cosmetic “surgery.” Our experienced artisans gave him the Royal Treatment and we think he looks INCREDIBLE!!! At 30H x 22D x 28W this guy is life sized (like an actual toddler!) He is an absolutely marvelous spectacle that could only be created by the hands of renowned artist Sergio Bustamante! Infamous for his productions of unique “humanoid” like creatures and subjects, this sculpture is part of Bustamante’s “Fish Boy” series collection depicting a child with fish-like features including his green flowing hair styled as a mohawk of fish scales and his skin bearing a slight green tint with scales all over his body, and swirls at his wrists and ankles. Is he part boy, part merman? We think so… and he is ALL AWESOME!! He will be an incredible addition to your Bustamante collection if you are fortunate to have one… or a perfect “first” piece to start one! He will be quite the conversation piece on a pedestal anywhere you display your fabulous art or make a bold statement in an entry way or dining room if you have a table suited to host his size. He is a MUST have if you enjoy mesmerizing mythical objects of fantasy and imagination.
Sergio Bustamante was born in 1949 in Sinaloa, Mexico. He is a painter, sculptor, and designer known best for his depictions of animals, mythic characters, and unique humanoid like subjects. His work has stood out worldwide for originality and imagination. He works with ceramic, wood, plastic, bronze, paper mâché, etc., and typically paints and glazes for added features and details of realism to bring his creatures to life. He studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara, but he left before his degree in order to focus on crafting and art. Bustamante and fellow artist Melquiades Preciado founded the SerMel Workshop in 1963 in Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico. The workshop’s name was created from the combination of the first three letters of each of their names, Ser-Mel. Their original artwork was immediately recognized in Mexico and around the world and garnered awards. In 1966 he showcased his first exhibition at the Galeria Misracha in Mexico City. By the end of the 1970s Bustamante went out on his own and established the “Family Workshop Studio” in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco. The workshop was left in the hands of Melquiades and his brothers Luis and Fausto. Today, Bustamante continues to exhibit his work all over the world.
This magnificent Sergio Bustamante “Fish Boy” series hand painted ceramic sculpture is just too incredible to let go! Even and especially with his tender loving repair care!!! We know he won’t last long, so if you love him half as much as we do… you better not let him get away… get your hooks in him… and make him YOURS!!!!
