This simple yet amazing dinnerware was designed by Massimo Vignelli and his wife, Lella in 1964. It is made of BPA-free polymer Melamine. When first designed they were made in Italy and originally in bright yellow; however, that company had financial issues and production was halted. Then, the Vignelli’s met American Alan Heller. And the rest, as they say, is history. Heller bought the molds and re-released the dinnerware in 1971 as his newly founded company’s first product but still produced it in Italy. It was immediately inducted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum, and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Modern Art. The white tableware has never been out of production since. In 1975 production moved to the United States and it was around that time the bright colors were introduced.
