BIG, BEAUTIFUL, and the BEST of BAKER FURNITURE!!!! This is a massive and quite marvelous mahogany and walnut Chinese Chippendale China cabinet or bookcase with a breakfront & drop-down secretary in the top center of the lower buffet by Baker Furniture. The center section of the whole cabinet bumps out a bit in front of the two sides. For those that may not know, that’s what the “breakfront” feature is… The sides are recessed a bit behind the center section. Let’s discuss the top section of the cabinet first. The top is divided into three separate sections with three height adjustable wood shelves in each section. It features double doors in the center and two side doors with a skeleton key that works on all three top door openings. All the door fronts possess glass mullion doors with true divided lites. GORGROUS!! The center top of the cabinet is crowned with a gorgeous, pierced pediment detail and below, dental crown molding runs along the top edge all the way around. The entire top section rests upon the lower buffet. At first glance (when closed,) the lower cabinet appears to have four stacked drawers in the center BUT… it’s an illusion!! The top “drawer front” is actually a drop down door feature for the secretary desk. That door (when dropped and pulled out) doubles as the desktop which bears a beautiful brown leather surface with gold embossed edges and a built-in desk organizer with four slots and six smaller drawers for mail, office supplies, and storage. Directly below the secretary desk are three large drawers with brass Hepplewhite shield & bale pulls and an inlaid veneer border around each door edge. It has two side doors with burlwood door fronts and an inlaid oval in the veneer and drop pulls on each door. Behind each door is a non-adjustable wood shelf and although it is not height adjustable, it can be removed if you prefer. This colossal cabinet is technically in two separate pieces which is convenient for moving and shipping purposes. However, the buffet top is not finished, and it is not intended for use as two pieces. It is not only impressive in size but in versatility, purpose, and Chinese Chippendale magnificence!! Some call it Georgian while others call it Traditional but no matter, we call it FABULOUS!!! It is a beautifully crafted, highly functional piece of vintage furniture and it is going to be incredible in your family room or living room full of art & decor, in your dining area filled with fine China or vintage dishware, or in the study holding books, literature, and the ideal space to utilize the secretary. Baker is one of the most prestigious names in furniture! They were founded in 1890 by Siebe Baker, an immigrant from the Netherlands as an interior woodwork and door company. Three years later they made their first piece of furniture. In 1910 Siebe’s son, Hollis S. Baker, joined the company as a salesman and throughout most of Baker’s existence it was a family-controlled business, even being sold and repurchased in the 1920s-1930s. Baker is considered a design legacy and over the years they have produced furniture designed by such greats as Donald Desky and Kem Weber in the early 20th century, Finn Juhl in the mid-20th century, and John Saladino and Barbara Barry in the late 20th century. They have introduced many award-winning furniture collections including, during the 1940s and 1950s, Far East Collection, the first Asian furniture collection manufactured in the USA; and Palladian Collection an Italian neo classic design. Then, in the 1960s and 1970s the introduction of country English and French Provincial featuring the reproduction of choice antiques from the home of the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. After decades of being in the Baker family’s hands, in 1969 it was sold to Magnavox then in 1986 to Kohler Co. Today it remains a part of Kohler and operates out of North Carolina. Still one of the top names in furniture.
