Yeah Baby!!! This is a sofa that Austin Powers could love!! But seriously is it a fabulous modern sofa sleeper that will be incredible wherever you use it. This incredible marvel was produced in the 1980s by Spherical Furniture of Boone, NC. I have not been able to determine if they are still around (ha! pun intended). This sleeper sofa has no metal or wood components. It is polyurethane foam through and through and in seconds its crescent shape flips open and, along with its matching ottomans, converts into very comfy extra sleeping space. And if you think getting bedding to fit is a deterrent…never fear…another feature of this fantastic sofa sleeper is a device that they referred to as a “pocketing band” which allows you to use standard flat bed sheets for the round bed!
Frank Petersilie, a former art professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, is the inventor of this innovative sofa bed. But he didn’t start out to invent or produce furniture. His brainstorm was the idea of a round igloo type of modular housing. Unfortunately, the recession of 1973 foiled the second-home buying market that he was targeting, and he discovered people were more interested in his round furniture than in his round houses. According to an article in The Christian Science Monitor, Petersilie, designer and chairman, and Bruce Shelton, president of the company they formed to produce this furniture, operated factories in Boon, NC and Gardena, CA, and specialty store accounts across the country and in Hawaii. The foam furniture was unusual in several ways besides its mod look. The number one way was their weight which was far less than conventional like furniture thereby creating easier and cheaper mobility. As stated above, I have been unable to locate the company still in existence.
We fell in love with this mod comfy piece and know you will too. Make it yours!!
