Alright you two! Quit clowning around so we can get a good photo!!! Gosh!! These two comedians are full of funny business!!! Aren’t these guys great?? We certainly think so!! This fabulous pair of Papier Mache clown figurals were handmade, and hand painted in Mexico and are attributed to the iconic Jeanne Valentine! One is wearing a bright yellow suit with orange polka dots. He is in an acrobatic position with his big white and blue wide toed flat shoes in the air. The other jaunty fellow is tumbling in a back-bend position in his bright yellow suit with vertical red stripes. They both have blazing blue hair, their faces are distinctly painted, and of course, they are wearing big, shiny red noses! But, this whimsical pair can be repositioned upside down, right side up, or any which way you find them most entertaining. They would be fun displayed tumbling upon a sofa table in the living room, showing off on a shelf in the family room, or performing amongst other pranksters if you have a clown or jester collection. They are bursting with color, personality, and tons of spunk!
There is limited information about designer Jeanne Cecile Valentine, but we do know that she was born in Paris, France where she began designing clothing in the early 1900’s. She moved to the United States in the 1940’s and then to Mexico in the 1950’s where she spent a lengthy time in the process of becoming a Mexican citizen. In that time, she opened a shop in San Miguel where she trained people in techniques of the French craft of Papier Mache. Her works were found in the very sophisticated stores in New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Paris, and London. Her clothing and Paper Mache creations are enthusiastically collected and are highly sought after today.
This lively pair of Papier Mache clowns attributed to Jeanne Valentine won’t last long! So, if you love them as much as we do, stop clowning around, and make them YOURS!!!
