Can we just say…. SPECTACULAR seating!?!?! Yes, yes we can! This is a magnificent set of four dining chairs 2 side and 2 armchairs comprised of maple frames and they are wearing a fabulous new old stock vintage black, white, and gold fabric. They are attributed to Statesville Furniture Company, have tags retailed by Woodward & Lothrop, and they have a classic mid-century modern appeal much like designs by Paul McCobb and George Nakashima and bit of a Danish flair like designs by Hans Weber… they are STUNNING!! Their frames have square straight legs that gradually round at the foot, stretchers on both sides, lovely front apron, and phenomenal spindle barrel backs. The armchairs have an extra spindle on each side and the top of the back is horseshoe or kind of boomerang shaped… each pair compliments the other nicely! They will be wonderful with a breakfast nook, game table, smaller dining table, or you could certainly use them as extra seating in your living or family room.
Woodward and Lothrop, or “Woodies,” was a department store headquartered in Washington D. C. that began as the capital’s first department store in 1887. It was opened first as a dry goods store in the Boston area by Samuel Walter Woodward and Alvin Mason Lothrop in partnership with Charles E, Cochrane. The first store was so successful that within a year, they moved to a larger location at 921 Pennsylvania Avenue. After flooding in 1886, they moved again to the corner of 11th and F Streets NW. Woodward and Lothrop purchased Cochrane’s share of the partnership, and the new store was renamed Woodward & Lothrop. They expanded into suburban shopping malls after World War 2 and It became a target of takeover attempts in the 1980s, and eventually accepted buyout from Detroit shopping center mogul A. Alfred Taubman. The greater Washington area was also affected by sharp reductions in defense spending after the end of the Cold War, which led to a loss of consumer confidence. By November 1995, all Woodward & Lothrop stores permanently closed.
Whatever you choose to use them with, this quintessential mid-century modern designed quartet is sure to make a statement in your home! Don’t hesitate…Make them YOURS!!!
