What could be more fun and interesting than a vintage mid-century Papier Maché sculpture of a clown? A pair of Papier Maché clown sculptures!! This fabulous pair were handmade and hand painted circa 1960 in Jeanne Valentine’s studio in San Miguel Mexico. The pair consists of one jolly 16-inch-tall clown standing on his head with his obligatory big shoes waving in the air and one 16.5-inch clown wearing an admirals hat and jacket with his big shoes as well. These awesome pieces of 1960’s art are in wonderful vintage condition. They do have small nicks which only add to their charm. The upright clown does have a repaired crack on his neck. Jeanne Valentine’s work is considered top of the line for Papier Maché and Papier Maché Mexico folk art. Her pieces are enthusiastically collected. Jeanne Valentine was born in Paris circa 1900 but came to the US in 1940. She was a fashion designer in the 1950’s and switched to the French art of Papier Maché in the 1960’s.
